I’ve been in major “stash busting” mode – crocheting and knitting like a fiend, making a dent in the vast amount of yarn stored in “Yarnia”, a.k.a. “Yarntopia”… a room in my basement filled with bins of yarn.

I finished a crocheted cardigan in June:

My favorite day of the year has come and gone – the day we go to the Michigan Fiber Festival! Once again, my friend Amy was kind enough to get us both tickets through the Windy City Knitting Guild. Tickets include the bus ride to and from the festival (leaving at 7:00 a.m. sharp), a lunch, and snacks.

Last year many people wondered why I went, given I do not knit or spin (though I do crochet) and I’m allergic to wool, alpaca, angora, and all the other yarns most go to purchase. No one questioned my presence this year. While I can’t actually KNIT, I do have knitting needles and I’ve even picked them up!

I went to the Michigan Fiber Festival the other weekend. No, it’s not a festival with booths of Metamucil, Benefiber, Fiber One, etc. It’s a YARN festival! Lots and lots of beautiful yarn – and fluffy stuff (also known as “roving”) from which to make yarn – and animals from which to make fluffy stuff from which to make yarn.

My friend Amy bought two tickets on the Windy City Knitting Guild’s bus. The bus left Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. sharp. I arrived first. The woman in charge asked me if I was a member of the knitting guild, to which I replied “No, but my friend Amy is. She got us two tickets.” The woman suggested I join the knitting guild, to which I replied “I don’t knit.” She looked at me, perplexed. “Why are you going to the fiber festival?” “Oh”, I replied, “I crochet – and I like yarn.”

Stash Bash 2

In a recent post, I admitted what an enormous amount of yarn I’ve accumulated.  I had taken pictures of my stash back in February – I must have at least two (maybe even three) times as much yarn now. It has its own room in the basement.

Stash busting

I confess – I’ve accumulated an ENORMOUS amount of yarn.  I had taken pictures of my stash back in February – I must have at least two (maybe even three) times as much yarn now.

Among the yarn I’ve collected – a large box of yarn my mother sent me when my aunt Esther B. went into assisted living.

I admit I may be more of a “yarn collector” than a true “crocheter”. I adore yarn.  Many of us that knit or crochet refer to our purchased yarn as our “stash”.  This seems appropriate.  I looked up the definition for stash, and one amounted to “something stored or hidden, such as money or illegal drugs”. I definitely treat my yarn like something precious and a little naughty or embarrassing. My friends would say I have “stash beyond life expectancy” – meaning I own more yarn than I could POSSIBLY ever crochet into finished objects.
