Class work

I went to hockey class #3 last week.  I still stink.  Superman dives still kick my butt.  This class, we were on the full-size rink, and at an earlier time slot.  When it came time for scrimmage, I noticed something.  The instructor usually divides up teams based on jersey color, as that’s a pretty easy way to for us to identify our teammates.  Usually, it’s three teams: white jerseys, black jerseys, and other-color jerseys.

Scar-face

I’m taking hockey classes.  Two classes down… many classes to go.  Not surprisingly, I’m the worst one in class (again).

Pass the puck

I just signed up to take Hockey 101 for a second ten-week session. It’s expected you’ll take the class two or three times before moving on to Hockey 102.  You must be able to do a quick lap around the ice under control, skate backwards, and perform a hockey stop on at least one side before you “graduate” Hockey 101. In my case, I may need to take a LOT of Hockey 101 sessions.

One of my coworkers said he didn’t know women played hockey until the last Olympics. I’m guessing there’s more men that play hockey than women, but women definitely play hockey.

I started Hockey 101 classes. I’ve been a hockey fan for years, but this was the first time I’d donned the equipment myself. In fact, I’ve rarely put on skates.  I’ve gone to ice rinks a few times, and slowly circled the ice, but this was definitely a new experience.  Hockey 101 was advertised as “for total beginners; adults who would love to learn how to play the great game of ice hockey but have never skated before.”  I’m an adult, and I’ve barely skated before, I figured the class was perfect.

I’ve had a few crochet projects I’ve been working on F_O_R_E_V_E_R.  I’m making a huge blanket, a motif scarf out of the scraps of yarn from my poor demised rose wrap shell, a coat (yes, I’m attempting to make the same coat yet again, despite my earlier failures), and a delicate sweater using a very lightweight yarn and a very tiny hook.

So, it’s not that I haven’t been crocheting that I haven’t posted anything on my blog in some time – it’s just that I haven’t FINISHED anything!  Fortunately, I did take a few breaks to crank out some “instant gratification” projects.  (Fun, fast, easy crochets.)

Ever just don’t know where the weekend went?  There’s days where I get so much done, I even amaze myself.  The past two days were not those kind of days, not at all.

Friday night I worked late.  I know that.  I got immersed in a project and time got away from me. I didn’t leave work until 10:00, which meant dinner with my boyfriend became late night breakfast at a 24/7 pancake joint.

Hockey vs well, everything else

I went to a Chicago Wolves game with my friend Amy this weekend.  The Chicago Wolves are the local AHL (American Hockey League) team.  The AHL isn’t as well-known as the NHL (National Hockey League), which includes teams like the Chicago Blackhawks.  However, it’s still a lot of fun to go to a game – it is hockey, after all!

I don’t consider myself much of a sports buff.  I certainly can’t play sports, due to my absolute lack of any athletic ability.  I do love to watch hockey!  I was excited to find fellow “crazy cat lady” Amy, who I knew through volunteering at a local cat shelter, was a hockey fan as well.

Hockey is the absolute best sport ever.  I don’t see how there can be any debate about it.  I can tolerate watching football – but there’s no sport that I enjoy watching as much as ice hockey.

Bar none

My boyfriend is a Green Bay Packers fan.  He was raised and went to college in Wisconsin, and he’s stayed loyal to his “home” football team.  My dad is a bit of a Packers fan as well.  He grew up in Nebraska (with no professional football team) and when he lived in Wisconsin becoming a Packers fan was natural, I guess.

Living in Chicago, it may seem I would be a fan of the Chicago Bears.  I was when I first moved here, but for various reasons I had a “falling out” with the Bears and was a free agent when my boyfriend and I started dating.  So, influenced by my dad and boyfriend, I’ve become a Packers fan as well.
