The big news in Chicago is our loss of the 2016 Olympics bid. I’m sure you’re all wondering what my personal feelings are on the subject – so I decided I’d write my column on SHOPPING!

I’ve lost over 50 pounds this year.  Obviously, that means buying new clothes.  What may be less obvious is it means buying a LOT more clothes.  People fail to realize you can’t just start out in your old larger clothes, then buy a new wardrobe when you’re finished losing weight, and wear clothes that don’t fit in between.  Cinching clothes with belts and safety pins only gets you so far – and by the way, you have to buy new belts as well.

Protein is the building block for muscle. It raises blood glucose levels slowly and keeps them elevated for longer, increasing energy. It increases metabolism, and contributes toward are feelings of satiety (feeling “full”).  While humans, as omnivores, don’t have the high protein requirements of cats – we STILL need protein!

I credit some of my weight gain over the years to my LOVE of delicious coffee drinks.  Now, some of my friends would argue I don’t even like coffee.  Maybe they’re right.  I certainly never ever drink black coffee – or even sweetened black coffee.  I was one of the many in line for a green tea frappuccino or a chai tea latte or a white mocha or a mint condition – no, don’t hold the whipped cream or sprinkles.  Heck, why not also get a scone while I’m there?  They are scrumptious!

So, one of the first things I missed when I started NutriSystem was my “coffee”.  Because I missed it so much, I got a bit creative and started crunching numbers.  I can see the large coffee drinks with whipped cream and flavorings and scones that I got in the past started out my days in excess of 1,000 calories.  Oh my!  I was consuming most of my calorie allotment for the day in the morning and getting little-to-no NUTRITION in the process!

However, I’ve figured out there’s a way to get my coffee and drink it too! – and get the weight off.

I decided to make one of my goals for 2009 to eat healthier. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Eating healthier! Of course, the question became – exactly what does that MEAN, to eat healthier? Obviously fruits and vegetables are healthy. I get that. What I don’t understand is everything else. All those packaged meals that are so convenient – are those healthy? The salads and other meals – are those good for me? I haven’t the faintest idea. I find it all overwhelming. They print nutrition labels on everything at the store, but all that information – are those grams of fat and protein and carbohydrates healthy?

I previously posted my four goals for 2009, including:
“Fit into a regular (not women’s) size 14 – Lose 20 pounds by my niece’s wedding in July”

Well, it’s May April and I just bought two pairs of jeans this weekend in size EIGHT, and I’ve lost 29 pounds since January!

It’s over three months in, and I’m still loving the NutriSystem plan! I can’t believe it, really. I’ve tried SO many diets – there are few I would make it three months on, and definitely I’d be screaming to quit by now on the others! But how can I complain when I’m eating food that tastes better and makes me FEEL better than ever before?

I wore my hot-cat-mama-skinny-pants yesterday. I went to Dress Barn several weeks ago and tried on a few dresses – I NEVER wear dresses or skirts, but it’d be nice if I had a dress for my niece’s wedding in July. I landed up buying TWO dresses – in size TWELVE! Then I got a case of buyer’s remorse. So many of my clothes are now loose and baggy – what if the dresses didn’t fit in July? I decided to take them back and try them on in the next size down – except they didn’t HAVE the next size down anymore… so I tried on the size eight – and they FIT! They’re a tad snug, in my opinion, but they definitely fit!

Bok choy

Saturday was “errand day”. I took Rumpelmintz to the vet, made cat food, and got my hair cut (and highlighted – woo hoo!). Then I went to Kmart, dropped off some donated medications at the cat shelter, and stopped at Trader Joe’s to get groceries before going to Pet Supplies Plus to buy litter. Hectic day.

I love Trader Joe’s, but Trader Joe’s on a Saturday afternoon is NOT my favorite. Packed with people. Couldn’t enter some aisles. Carts lined up for the checkouts into the aisles themselves, making it nearly impossible to get anywhere. I persevered. I always start on the aisle furthest from produce, ending in the produce section. I’m still attempting to eat healthy, but the produce section is a challenge yet. There are the old stand-by’s of course, carrots, apples, etc. I’m trying to expand my horizons, though. So, I challenged myself to get a couple new things. This time, I opted for baby bok choy and minneolas. The minneolas resembled small oranges or tangerines, so I figured I could just peel them and eat them. Shouldn’t be hard.

There was a staff member nearby, so I asked her if she knew how to prepare the bok choy.
She had no idea. Well, I figured surely I could stir fry it or something?

I’ve been disheartened by just how out-of-shape I am. I started exercising Sunday, and I chose my “easiest” exercise video. I used to dislike that one because it was “too easy”. It kicks my butt now. I did it on Sunday and Monday and thought I’d die.

It doesn’t help that dear Rumpelmintz HATES for me to exercise.  I don’t know why, but she HATES it.  Perhaps it’s just because I’m not paying attention to her.  Sunday I started the video, and about half way through, Rumpelmintz bit the back of my head during floor exercises.  Ow!  I had to hold her for the rest of the video.  Monday night, she started to attack me – Kitty.com jumped to my defense, and they proceeded to fight on top of my head.  They stopped – then Rumpelmintz came up to bite my head – I fended her off, but got my arm bit.  She may need to go in “time out” when I exercise.

Exercising annoys me, as does most everything else.

I have an aversion to the word “resolutions”, for whatever reason, so instead I try to come up with goals for the year ahead – preferably with steps toward achieving them.
