Fruits and veggies – they do a doggie good!

April 6, 2014 by Lynette

Dixie enjoys her purchased dog food and treats.  However, I like the option of some more “natural” foods and would love some lower-calorie options than the spreadable cheese and peanut butter I’ve used in her Kong.  Here’s a list of fruits/vegetables given to Dixie to try:

* carrots – NOPE. If they are whole cooked baby carrots, she will snub entirely. If they are shredded raw carrot that I drop, she will bite on them a bit then spit out bits of them everywhere.

* red bell pepper – MAYBE. If it is a bit of raw red bell pepper, she will snub it entirely. If it is a bit of cooked that falls out of my breakfast burrito, she will eat it up quickly.

* zucchini – NOPE. Bit of raw zucchini – snubbed entirely.

* apple – YES! Yes, yes, yes, all the apple slices!!!! I have been using them as occasional treats or Kong filling.  The seeds are toxic if consumed if sufficient in quantity and chewed/ground, but the rest of the apple is fine and Dixie loves it.

* tomato – NOPE. Bit of raw tomato rejected. Will not even try.

* banana – MAYBE. She will put it in her mouth, then spit it out. She might eat it later, if REALLY hungry.

* mushroom (baby bella) – NOPE. (Wild mushrooms are to be avoided, as many are toxic. However, it seems supermarket human-edible mushrooms are generally considered safe.)

* green bean – NOPE.  Frozen green bean, gnawed on a bit and spit green bean bits all over the floor.

* pear – YES!  Yummy as apples! (Again, the pear was cored.  The seeds are toxic if consumed if sufficient in quantity and chewed/ground, but the rest of the pear is fine and Dixie loves it.)

* cauliflower (cooked) – YES!  Yummy!  Will work for cauliflower! (added 4/8/14)

* broccoli (cooked) – YES!  Even able to sneak in a bit of cooked carrot between bites of broccoli and cauliflower.  (added 4/8/14)

* yellow summer squash – Nope.  If it’s raw, forget about it.  If it’s cooked, she will chew on it and then spit yellow squash goo on the kitchen floor. (added 4/12/14)

* peas – Maybe.  If they’re those washed-out yellow-green peas in dog food, she may pick them out.  However, if they are yummy green peas I made for myself (from frozen), she seems rather fond of them. (added 4/13/14)

* cucumber – Nope.  Ask for it with great excitement, bite into it, and spit the pieces on to the floor.  (added 5/9/14)

Meanwhile, there are many horrific things on the ground we will encounter while walking that are YUMMY LICIOUS! Like nasty old cheese puff, bits of bread, unknown crumbly something-or-other licked off sidewalk… I did not allow her close enough to the mostly-eaten bird that is just rib cage and wings or part-of-dead-squirrel (back legs and a tail) to find out what she thought of these things. I do not want to know. Yuck. She once ate grass. I suspect that was a tummy issue she was attempting to resolve naturally – or something.

She REALLY wanted to try tortilla chips.  I did not allow this, nor did I allow avocado since that’s also considered toxic.

List of human foods that may be unsafe for pets here.

Dixie dislikes carrots.
