The verdicts are in. I have tasted all the interesting things I purchased Friday night in the produce section. (I haven’t yet tasted the frozen breaded okra – but I have tried all the produce, so I’m going to call it.)
Okay, this has nothing to do with the produce I bought. I bought this jar of chili paste a while back. I didn’t know what I’d do with it. In fact, the cashier at Trader Joe’s said she would have no idea what to do with it. I was kind of hoping it’d be some sort of substitute for the curry paste I’d been buying – that had shellfish in it.
I was searching online and found this recipe for a curry using chili paste and curry powder. I had some bok choy on hand so that was perfect. I gave it a go – along with some tahini roasted cauliflower. Verdict: Single thumbs up, would make again.
This has nothing to do with anything. It’s a breakfast burrito I made. I love breakfast burritos. (It’s just eggs cooked/scrambled with tomatoes and bell peppers and cheese and sour cream and salsa in a tortilla.)
Chayote squash sauteed with soy “Italian sausage” and raw pumpkin seeds; baked plantains; and persimmon. I love plantains, but I think a couple I bought were overly ripe, they were somewhat tasteless. The persimmon – meh. I’m not a huge fan. The skin is kind of tough, I’ll peel it next time. I just didn’t love it. Not bad, just not flavorful enough to really strike my fancy. If I had to compare it to something, I’d say it’s kind of like a kiwi. The chayote squash – a HUGE win. I love it. If I had to compare it to something, it’s kind of like zucchini but even more awesome.
Verdicts: meh to the persimmon; two thumbs up to the chayote squash
Breakfast – left over plantains and a soy breakfast patty.
Prickly pear – first one was green. Figured out how to peel it. I found it pretty tasteless, the seeds are REALLY hard so avoiding biting into any of them. I tried cooking it with some pomegranate. Meh. I forgot to take a picture of it prepared.
A very unbalanced dinner of left over plantains, a persimmon, and a purple prickly pear. Still “meh” on the prickly pear (also known as “tuna”) and persimmon, especially the pear. The persimmon might be growing on me.
