My birthday is coming. Not soon, but it’s coming. I don’t mind getting older. So far, my 40’s have been pretty good. I was still figuring out what to do with my life in my 20’s and making all kinds of major decisions on school and career and whatnot. In my 30’s I was starting to have some idea what I was doing, but I was still working a lot of things out. Now I’ve got a career, I’m done with school and professional exams, and I’m kind of settled into my life and it’s all just hanging in there. At least, I hope so.
Anyway, my birthday is coming. While I don’t really celebrate birthdays, I do tend to use them as an excuse to treat myself to a little something… or sometimes more than a little of something.
This year, it started with an offer of 30% off from my favorite jewelry shop. 30% off! That, and the excuse of my upcoming birthday helped me decide I should treat myself to a pretty necklace. It wasn’t a huge purchase, but definitely not a necessary one. But it’s really a pretty necklace, and I got a great deal with the 30% off. Plus my birthday is coming up. It’ll be a little gift to myself.
Last Fall I had considered taking hockey lessons. We all know, I LOVE hockey! I did some research and found local options for lessons and started pricing the equipment. Hockey equipment is EXPENSIVE! Then my car broke down and other events took place and I decided there was no way I should take hockey lessons.
However, I was out with friends in December and was talking to the friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend who had been taking hockey lessons for about a year. He and the other students had just formed their own league and were starting to play games. He knew a woman in their league who was going to play the goalie position. So, she needed to buy all new goalie equipment, and was selling her current gear. I met with her on Thursday, and almost all her equipment fit! I could buy all this practically new hockey equipment for a STEAL and I did. It’s too late to take the lessons starting this month, but I can sign up in March. Besides, my birthday is coming, right?
I was talking to a coworker Friday, and he knew an online source for cheap hockey jerseys. I’ve been watching hockey for about 15 years now, but I only own two jerseys (one Chicago Blackhawks jersey and one Chicago Wolves jersey). Hockey jerseys are really pricey. They’re way more expensive than football, baseball, or basketball shirts, from what I can see. The site my coworker mentioned had jerseys for less than half the price I’d found them elsewhere – and these were the nicer jerseys with the players’ names on them! (The ones I have now don’t have any names on them, as that costs extra.) I deserve a hockey jersey (or two) as I’m such a huge fan. Besides, I’m going to be playing hockey, and I have to wear a hockey jersey when I play. It’ll be my birthday soon. I should treat myself.
I’ve got one other potential purchase in mind… a little something special, seeing as it’s my birthday and all. My birthday is coming, and it’s a good thing it’s coming soon, as I need to NOT have the excuse to treat myself to a little – or a lot – of something!

Hey, it is your birthday that’s coming up, isn’t it? 😉
I love that we think alike in this way. But at least you get the things you want and treat yourself right. You do for others all the time and now it is time for you! Hockey gear and jerseys some nice jewelry. I think it’s great!
