All washed up

November 29, 2008 by Lynette

I HATE my washing machine. HATE IT. DETEST IT.

I bought it in October of 2006. I was not happy that the old one was broken (it came with the house and who knows how old it was) but I was excited at the prospect of getting a front-loading machine. The washer/dryer are up on a bit of a concrete platform, and it was annoying to have to stand on my tiptoes on the edge of the platform to reach into the old top-loading machine.

Since the doorway is not particularly wide, I could only purchase a pretty small “compact” model – but it’s only me and the cats, so I thought it would suit my purposes fine.

I hate this washing machine. If I’d been smart, I’d have just returned it after the first time I used it, seeing how horrible it was. Tonight was fairly typical.

  • Loaded machine with a throw and a fleece cat bed
  • Poured in detergent, set the cycle, and hit “start”
  • Came back an hour later to see the washing machine has done nothing and the cycle light is flashing
  • Turned it off, turned it on, set the cycle again and hit “start”
  • Came back an hour later, started pulling out the wet laundry to discover a large amount of water still in the machine, and VERY wet dripping laundry – removed cat bed anyway, so only a small fleece throw remained
  • Set the cycle to “spin” and hit “start”
  • Machine did nothing
  • Turned it off, turned it on, set the cycle to “spin” and hit “start”
  • Machine did nothing
  • Banged on machine with my hands and screamed at it, telling it that it is the WORST washing machine I have ever known!
  • Set the cycle to “spin” and hit “start”
  • Machine drained the water inside it and half-heartedly tossed the throw around for maybe 10 minutes
  • Removed dripping wet throw and put it in the dryer – which thankfully works

I’ve called the manufacturer and had repairmen out here more times than I can count. After messing around with the machine and replacing numerous parts with no improvement, they announced “this is the way it’s supposed to work”. HUH?

Cyber-Monday I may have to bite the bullet and just see if I can find a good deal on another one.

What kind is it? Just so I won’t buy it when I need to get a new one 😉

    Hi Pam!
It’s a Whirlpool Duet Sport compact front-loading washer.
My friend has a Whirlpool and loves it and recommended the brand… maybe just this model? Don’t know.
I have a Whirlpool microwave, oven, and fridge… the fridge and microwave are fine, I’m not real fond of the oven – but maybe I’m still spoiled from the fancy (and expensive) convection oven I had at my last place.

Very surprised to hear its a Whirlpool. I love my Whirlpool refrigerator. Sounds like you have a lemon. Try to get them to replace it if you can.

Nope – company won’t replace it. I complained countless times, they sent repairmen out – each time costing me a precious vacation day, they messed around with it – said they’d order a part, I’d take another day off so they could install said part, and it wouldn’t work any better. Now, of course, the warranty has run out over all this time. It’s a piece of dog poo.

Ironically, I looked at my favorite stores cyber-Monday specials – and the only washer on special is the cruddy one I have. Sometimes (I feel like most times) I can’t win.

    Ah well, could be worse.
